MDC Partners is putting its thinking talent to the test, literally!
The New York business intelligence division of kbs+p, led by Executive Director Joseph Panzarella, is pulling together a team of business analysts within the MDC Partners network and entering a modeling competition against some of the best minds in the private, public, and academic world. “I read an article in Bloomberg Businessweek regarding a firm called Kaggle that manages online competitions on behalf of clients seeking innovative solutions through data analysis to solve their real world problems.” Panzarella felt this would be a great opportunity to utilize his team’s talents and showcase how agencies such as kbs+p perform this kind of work each day.
"Analytical units within agencies are under recognized; most clients seeking the services of agencies do so primarily for creative or media needs. We tend to be a pleasant surprise after a client selects kbs+p. I viewed this as an opportunity to promote our skills ahead of the curve. Plus, if you win, Kaggle awards money."
Panzarella plans to tap talent from sister agency Communefx, a database marketing services provider, to bolster his team’s chances for success. “Winning money is not our main objective,” Panzarella states, “rather showing how a diverse and talented staff within an advertising agency such as kbs+p and Communefx are as sophisticated as management consultants.”
The cross-agency team has entered a contest sponsored by Grockit, an online multiplayer game host for students preparing for the SAT, ACT, GMAT, LSAT and GRE standardized exams. Their mission: Predict, for each question attempted in the test set, whether the student will answer the question correctly.
According to Kaggle, Grockit’s desired outcome is to help students figure out in what areas they are weakest, but ultimately this will help create tests to better measure what a student actually knows. “At first this contest seemed a little bit outside our core area of expertise,” added Michael Newman, VP, Strategic Business Analysis at Communefx.  “But the more we thought about it, the parallels to modern consumer analytics became very clear - studying the behavioral patterns of individuals to optimize the effectiveness of one-to-one interactions.”
The team will produce an algorithm, that if selected, will be turned over to Grockit and become their intellectual property. And Panzarella predicts another benefit for Kaggle sponsors.  ”We’ll also tell them how we can help enhance their marketing communications.”
